Recovery of old dock gate for new Tyne Tunnel construction

The recovery of the old dock gate at A&P Tyne Wallsend after excess water pressure blew the gate from its hinge locations. A dive team from Sealane Inshore re-positioned the gate using two heavy lift cranes from Ainscough.  This dock was later used for the construction of the submerged element sections of the new Tyne Tunnel.

This is the gate after its recovery in its closed position ready to be used, after the dock is pumped dry and cleaned out. Then the construction of the new Tyne Tunnel sections can be made. The gate was found to be 10metres out into the river, from the hinge position. A number of air hoses were fitted to the gate to assist in reducing the weight of the gate while lifting.
